Lewis Hall explains why snubbing Manchester United for Newcastle was easy

Matthias JaissleLewis Hall has revealed that turning down interest from Manchester United to commit his long-term future to Newcastle United was a straightforward choice.
Transfer interest and summer turmoil
Manchester United monitored the defender for much of the summer window as they searched for competition and cover for Luke Shaw at left-back. Despite the speculation and a turbulent summer at St James’ Park involving managerial changes, the 22-year-old remained completely focused.
Eddie Howe departed the club earlier in the year, paving the way for Matthias Jaissle to take over as head coach. While key figures like Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon moved on during a period of transition, Newcastle refused to entertain any exit for Hall.
Speaking to Chronicle Live about the rumours regarding Old Trafford, Hall explained that he viewed the attention as validation of his hard work on the pitch.
No. I guess whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right. I guess it’s just a credit to your own performances and how you are as a player, how you are as a person.
The impact of Matthias Jaissle
The defender quickly decided to extend his stay on Tyneside until the summer of 2031, with early discussions with Jaissle proving pivotal to his choice. The young coach convinced the player about the long-term ambitions of the club.
Hall told Chronicle Live about his swift decision to put pen to paper on the new deal:
After not many conversations, not many training sessions, I knew that the manager was going to be really good for this club and I knew that as a team, bringing in new players and improving the squad was really important and as soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.
The defender has featured 109 times for the Magpies since arriving from Chelsea in July 2024, scoring four goals and providing nine assists. His strong form has continued this term, yielding one goal and two assists across seven appearances in all competitions.
Tactical freedom and defensive duties
Life under the new head coach has brought a positive atmosphere to the squad, with Newcastle collecting eight points from their opening five Premier League fixtures. Hall appreciates the tactical demands placed upon him by the coaching staff.
Discussing his role under the new regime, Hall told Chronicle Live:
He gives me the licence to express myself as long as I do the defensive work and do the running that’s required for this position, which is quite a lot of work.
Although the team experienced some difficult moments, including a stoppage-time penalty conceded against Liverpool, the full-back’s strong performances have earned him a recall to the England setup after missing out on the World Cup squad earlier in the year.
