Manchester City players fear relegation after financial guilty verdict

Manchester City’s dressing room has reportedly been thrown into a state of deep anxiety, with players actively discussing the terrifying prospect of relegation from the top flight.

The concern follows a devastating ruling by an independent commission, which has found the reigning champions guilty of widespread and prolonged financial misconduct.

A devastating verdict for the champions

On Tuesday, the independent panel delivered a damning verdict, finding the club guilty on 114 of the 115 charges originally brought against them back in 2018.

The official legal decision detailed how fake sponsorship agreements were systematically utilised to secretly funnel massive sums of money directly into the club’s accounts.

These illicit arrangements allegedly generated more than £900 million, with investigators accusing club chiefs of actively attempting to mislead them during the inquiry.

Furthermore, the hierarchy faces serious claims of falsifying financial records, while their own witnesses allegedly provided untruthful testimonies during the long-running proceedings.

In an official statement announcing the historic verdict, the Premier League confirmed the scale of the rule breaches:

“An independent Commission has found Manchester City FC guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-season period, and the majority of charges in relation to its failure to co-operate with the League’s investigation.”

Dressing room anxiety begins to build

According to reports in France, the reality of the situation is starting to weigh heavily on the playing squad as they contemplate their futures.

A representative of one first-team player revealed to L’Equipe that the dressing room is filled with nervous chatter regarding the potential punishments they might face.

There is reportedly a growing belief among the players that even a heavy points penalty would effectively consign them to the Championship, should the authorities decide against direct expulsion.

If demotion does occur, it would trigger an unprecedented exodus of elite talent, forcing the club to sell off its most valuable superstars in a massive fire sale.

While the exact penalties remain unconfirmed, potential outcomes range from financial penalties and signing restrictions to far more drastic measures.

The club could see their trophies won between 2009 and 2018 revoked, face massive points deductions, or find themselves expelled from the top division entirely.

City prepare for a relentless legal battle

Responding to the decision, Manchester City released a statement expressing their frustration and maintaining their innocence:

“Manchester City FC is both disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League Commission, that has been published today.”

The club also made it clear they intend to fight the ruling, stating:

“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements uncompleted. Manchester City FC will now pursue the appeal avenues open to it, on the basis that the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe.”

City have until this Friday to formally submit their appeal against the landmark decision, with the club expressing disappointment in how the process has been handled.

In their official statement, the club also criticised the regulator, stating:

“The Club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League Board and Executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

Any final punishments will be delayed until the entire appeals procedure is resolved, a process that legal experts suggest could drag on for several years.
