Thomas Tuchel warns Cole Palmer after England withdrawal

Cole PalmerThomas Tuchel has warned Cole Palmer that the England train is rolling without him following his withdrawal from the latest international camp.
In a report by the Evening Standard, which was also carried by the Mirror, the England manager made it clear that players who skip international duty face a fight to regain their places.
Palmer pulled out of the squad due to load management, but England thrived in his absence, scoring 16 goals across four matches. When asked if the Chelsea star and other absentees had slipped down the pecking order, Tuchel told the Evening Standard:

“Everyone should be eager to come, desperate to come because the train is rolling and full credit to the players who bought into that.”
The German coach insisted that the squad’s energy must remain focused entirely on those who show up for duty. Tuchel added:
“It can only work like this. We can only put our full energy into the camp and the players who are in camp make the camp special.”
Midfield stars grab their chance
England bounced back from their World Cup semi-final exit in style, beating Czechia twice and thrashing Croatia 7-0, despite also suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat to Spain. In the absence of Palmer and Phil Foden, other creative talents seized the opportunity to impress the new boss.
Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Newcastle defender Lewis Hall both earned heavy praise from the manager after stepping into the side. Scott shone in the seven-goal rout of Croatia, while Hall started three consecutive games at left-back.
Speaking about the young duo, Tuchel said:
“They were both excellent. Really excellent. I was very impressed with both of them.”
System change unlocks attacking flair
A tactical shift that pushed Jude Bellingham into a more advanced role alongside Harry Kane helped England play with a fluid, high-octane attacking style. Tuchel believes this new approach can help the national team reach another level, even if it means established stars like Palmer and Foden are left with questions over how they fit in.
When questioned on whether the Chelsea and Manchester City playmakers would suit this high-tempo system, Tuchel admitted he was uncertain. Tuchel said:
“I don’t know, is the honest answer. They are not here. This team took another step and it’s always about the guys who are here.”
The England manager expressed his delight at how the squad adapted to the tactical tweaks, praising their attitude and willingness to take calculated risks in the opponent’s half.
Serious competition for places
The warning is particularly stark for Palmer, who has reportedly missed several opportunities for his country in the past. Having earned 14 caps and scored in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, the Chelsea playmaker now faces intense competition from the likes of Anthony Gordon, who has established himself on the left wing.
Other notable absentees from the camp included Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Declan Rice, and Tino Livramento, all of whom now face a difficult path back into the starting line-up.
Crucial fixtures on the horizon
England are on the verge of qualifying for the Nations League knockout stages, which are scheduled to take place next March.
Before then, Tuchel’s side face a crucial double-header next month against Croatia and Spain, where a victory over the Croatians would set up a group-deciding clash on Spanish soil.
