Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has left the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo to make a dramatic return to the international stage despite their recent high-profile falling out. The veteran forward walked out on his country after being left as an unused substitute during a Nations League clash against Norway in Oslo.

The decision to bench the 41-year-old Al Nassr striker, who has scored a record 146 goals for his country, sparked a public feud. Ronaldo had started the previous match against Wales, featuring for just over an hour in a narrow 1-0 victory, but was left frustrated when he did not get on the pitch in the second fixture.

A sudden departure from the camp

The tension erupted after Jesus reportedly had a verbal agreement with the former Manchester United star that he would not start against Norway but could feature off the bench. Although Ronaldo warmed up during the second half, the manager chose to keep him on the bench as Portugal secured a tight 2-1 win.

Following the match, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner took to social media to confirm his departure from the squad, hinting at deeper issues behind the scenes.

Writing on his Instagram account, Ronaldo said:

“In due course, I will tell all the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I always dedicated myself.”

Jesus stands by his selection

The 72-year-old Portugal boss, who previously coached Ronaldo at club level in Saudi Arabia, has refused to back down over his team selections. Known for his uncompromising, old-school management style, Jesus made it clear that no individual player, regardless of their stature, would dictate his tactical decisions on the pitch.

Speaking about his tactical decisions, Jesus said:

“Because it’s not Cristiano, just like it will never be any player that will change my ideas as the coach.”

Despite his firm stance, the manager has offered to hold talks with the veteran forward before the next international fixtures are announced. He reiterated that the ultimate decision to return rests entirely with the player himself.

Speaking to reporters after a subsequent home win over Norway, Jesus said:

“If he wants to, he’ll return to the national team.”

Federation seeks a peaceful resolution

The Portuguese Football Federation is keen to defuse the situation, with president Pedro Proença describing the legendary forward as an extraordinary symbol of the nation. Proença has urged both parties to settle their differences behind closed doors rather than in the public eye.

Speaking about the incident, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença said:

“What happened was a misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally.”

While the off-field drama dominated the headlines, Portugal thrived on the pitch, securing four wins from four matches to sit top of Group Four. Gonçalo Ramos stepped into the spotlight, scoring the winner against Norway and netting again in a superb 4-2 victory over Denmark, while midfielders like Vitinha praised the tactical improvements under the new boss.

What lies ahead for the icon

Reports suggest the federation has already started making contingency plans for a potential farewell match for their record goalscorer if a reconciliation cannot be reached. Both the manager and the player are expected to make further statements regarding the situation in the coming days.
