Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner at the age of 33, ending a quarter-century wait for an English footballer to land the prestigious award, as first reported by Sky Sports.

– The England and Bayern Munich captain becomes just the fifth Englishman to claim the trophy, following in the footsteps of Michael Owen, who last took the honor back in 2001.

A journey unlike any other

Kane’s route to the summit of world football was far from conventional, involving early career loan spells down the football pyramid at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City, and Leicester City.

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood, who handed Kane his full Premier League debut in April 2014, praised the striker’s resilience when reflecting on his rise.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sherwood said:

“This is a Cinderella story we’ve never seen before. He keeps breaking records, and I keep thinking, ‘Are we talking about the same kid?'”

Sherwood pointed out how Kane had to fight for recognition in his early years, unlike prodigies who break into elite first teams as teenagers.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sherwood added:

“Kane came through the hard way, really. He was a player who wasn’t universally loved. He’s not like a Max Dowman, for instance, who is a superstar at 16 years of age.”

The speeches and the turning points

During his acceptance speech on stage, the Bayern forward reflected on the difficult path he took to reach the absolute top of the game.

Addressing the audience, Kane said:

“My journey wasn’t straightforward; I didn’t go straight to the top, I had to experience a lot of loan moves and fight my way to get to where I am now.”

That relentless work ethic helped Kane build a staggering career tally of nearly 550 goals for club and country, becoming the record goalscorer for both Tottenham and England.

His individual output reached extraordinary levels last term, netting 73 times across all competitions, including 61 for Bayern Munich—the highest single-season total by any player in Europe’s top five leagues since Cristiano Ronaldo managed 61 a decade earlier.

Global recognition in Munich

His £100m move from north London to Germany in the summer of 2023 proved pivotal in elevating his profile to match his individual numbers.

Former defender Jamie Carragher believes leaving Spurs was essential for the striker to finally be considered for global individual honors.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said:

“There’s no way Harry Kane could’ve won the Ballon d’Or if he was playing for Tottenham.”

Since making the switch to the Bundesliga, the forward has collected back-to-back league titles alongside a German Cup victory, adding team silverware to his extensive cabinet of personal golden boots.

What’s next

Kane will be back in action for Bayern Munich this weekend as they take on rivals Borussia Dortmund in a marquee Bundesliga clash on Saturday evening.
