Former Premier League manager Mauricio Pochettino has challenged his United States players to maintain their high standards after wrapping up a flawless international window.

The USMNT manager, who recently took charge of the national side, watched his team secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Canada, as reported by ESPN.

But rather than letting his squad rest on their laurels, the former Tottenham and Chelsea boss wants his young players to push themselves even harder when they return to their respective clubs.

A demanding message for the squad

Pochettino is determined to instil a relentless work ethic within his young group, warning them that international status does not excuse them from hard work.

Speaking to ESPN, Pochettino said:

“It’s not, ‘I am an international now. My teammate needs to run for me.'”

He wants his players to understand that representing their country requires a collective effort, demanding that they run both for themselves and their teammates to build a winning mentality.

The Argentine tactician believes his squad has the intelligence and raw talent to absorb these lessons and develop into far more experienced competitors.

Overcoming the Canadian test

The victory against Canada was secured thanks to a 29th-minute strike from Justin Ellis, who managed to shake off an earlier leg injury to find the back of the net.

Ellis diverted a driven pass from Alex Freeman past the Canadian goalkeeper to seal the only goal of the match in Minnesota.

However, the USMNT had to withstand significant pressure during the second half to protect their narrow lead.

Goalkeeper Brian Schwake was forced into action, pulling off a crucial save to tip a volley from Canada’s Luc de Fougerolles onto the crossbar.

Despite the late scare, Pochettino was delighted with how his team coped with the physical and mental demands of a busy schedule.

A perfect window for the USMNT

The international break proved to be an overwhelming success for the United States, who won all four of their matches during the window.

Pochettino made full use of his squad, handing at least one cap to all 28 players named in his roster.

An impressive 13 players made their international debuts, while seven different goalscorers found the net, including four teenagers.

The gruelling schedule saw the squad play four games across three different time zones in just two and a half weeks, yet their performances remained remarkably consistent.

Pochettino was quick to praise the positive atmosphere that has quickly developed around the national team camp since his arrival.

Speaking to ESPN, Pochettino said:

“I think no one said nothing negative. We didn’t hear nothing negative in those two weeks,”

Looking ahead to the Nations League

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss believes this positive environment is exactly what allows his players to express their talent on the pitch.

With the international break now concluded, the USMNT are turning their attention to the upcoming Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals.

They are scheduled to face Haiti in a two-legged tie, with the crucial second leg set to take place in Cincinnati on November 17.

Pochettino remains highly confident that his players will have no trouble rediscovering their competitive edge when they reconvene next month.

Speaking to ESPN, Pochettino said:

“I think if we build that idea of every time that we are involved with a national team, we compete in this way, I think it’s going to be easy to carry over the level of intensity into November.”
