Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has fiercely defended his squad’s unity following the dramatic departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from the international camp.

The veteran forward walked out of the squad on Wednesday after learning he would be benched for the second consecutive match.

Yet, the Selecao showed no signs of distraction on Thursday, securing a convincing 4-2 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen to maintain their perfect Nations League record.

Speaking to Sport TV after the match, Jesus said:

“The things that happen don’t separate the group; they haven’t separated us and they won’t separate us.”

Life after Ronaldo begins with a bang

The 41-year-old forward decided to leave the camp following a conversation with federation officials, having remained an unused substitute during the previous 2-1 win against Norway.

Ronaldo announced his departure on social media, writing:

“I have decided to leave the national team training camp.”

In his absence, AC Milan forward Gonçalo Ramos stepped up, assisting João Cancelo for the opening goal before scoring himself.

Vitinha and João Félix also found the net to ensure the Portuguese transition under their new manager continues smoothly.

When asked if the door remained open for the legendary forward to return to the national setup, the manager chose to focus entirely on the performance.

Speaking to Sport TV, Jesus said:

“A high-quality victory, with four goals, a top-level performance.”

The squad backs the manager’s vision

The Portuguese players have been quick to rally behind their manager, who succeeded Roberto Martinez after the World Cup.

Midfielder Vitinha praised the tactical progression the team has made since the 72-year-old manager took charge.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder noted that the players are quickly absorbing the manager’s tactical instructions during their time together.

Speaking to RTP, Jesus expressed complete confidence in his squad’s alignment with his tactical approach.

“I have a squad that believes in my vision.”

The players themselves have echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the team is growing stronger with every training session.

Ramos highlighted how much the new coaching staff has helped the players understand their roles on the pitch.

Touchline drama in Copenhagen

Despite the positive result, the evening was not entirely without controversy as tempers flared on the touchline.

Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund scored his side’s second goal and celebrated by performing Ronaldo’s famous celebration.

The gesture sparked a bizarre confrontation, with Jesus hitting the forward on the chest, prompting a physical shove from the Dane.

Hojlund has previously admitted his admiration for the former Manchester United icon, though he insisted there was no malice intended.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese squad have been instructed to keep details of the internal rift private until after their upcoming fixture.

Defender Renato Veiga admitted he had been told not to speak about the situation despite his close relationship with the veteran striker.

Portugal will host Norway on Sunday, where another victory would put them on the brink of securing a spot in the Nations League quarter-finals.
