Ivan Toney pleads not guilty to Soho nightclub assault charge
Ivan ToneyEngland forward Ivan Toney has denied charges of assault following an alleged physical confrontation at a London nightclub late last year. The 30-year-old striker pleaded not guilty during his initial appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The Al-Ahli player is accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The charge relates to an incident involving Saber Da Silva at 100 Wardour Street, a Soho music venue, on 6 December.
During the brief hearing, which lasted around 12 minutes, prosecutor Tom Heslop described a confrontation where the pair squared up to one another. It is alleged that Toney then lunged forward to headbutt the complainant before delivering several punches.
The decision to face a jury
The prosecution claimed the altercation left Da Silva with injuries to his fingers and nose. While District Judge Briony Clarke indicated the case could be dealt with by magistrates, Toney chose a different path.
Standing in the dock to confirm his name and age, the former Brentford striker elected to have his case heard at a Crown Court. This decision means his trial will take place before a judge and jury.
Toney was subsequently released on unconditional bail until his next scheduled court appearance. However, the judge warned him that failing to attend could result in an arrest warrant being issued.
A shock response to the allegations
The legal proceedings follow a detailed investigation by the Metropolitan Police, with the formal charge announced on 31 July. In a statement released by his representative, Toney expressed his determination to contest the allegations.
Speaking on behalf of the forward, his spokesperson said:
“Ivan acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court.”
The striker arrived at the central London court shortly after 9.30am on Thursday. He wore a black top over his shirt and tie, arriving with three members of his entourage.
An international career in the spotlight
The legal battle comes during a period of transition for the forward, who has earned 10 caps and scored one goal for his country. Toney featured in the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final.
He also represented England at the World Cup during the summer, featuring as a substitute in a semi-final loss to Argentina. He subsequently started the third-place playoff victory against France.
Despite his international experience, the striker was not selected for the latest England squad. He missed out on the country’s first four Nations League fixtures.
From League One to Saudi Arabia
Toney began his professional journey with his hometown club, Northampton Town. He later signed for Newcastle United, where he made two league appearances, before spending time with Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United.
His career reached new heights after joining Brentford in 2020, where he scored 72 goals and helped the club secure promotion to the top flight. He established himself as a premier goalscorer before securing a £40 million move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in 2024.
The striker must now prepare for his next legal appointment. He is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on 29 October, where he will face a judge and jury.
