Tennis icon Rafael Nadal joins Real Madrid board of directors

Tennis icon Rafael Nadal has officially joined the board of directors at Real Madrid following an invitation from club president Florentino Perez, as first reported by Caught Offside and Sky Sports.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner confirmed the surprise appointment on social media, cementing a lifelong connection with the European champions.

A lifelong passion becomes an executive position

Nadal announced his new role on social media after Perez and the board presented him with the formal offer.

Writing on his social media accounts, Nadal said:

“I want to thank President Florentino Pérez and the Board for proposing that I join the Board of Directors of Real Madrid. I have accepted this proposal with great excitement, a desire to learn, and with willingness to contribute everything I can.”

The 40-year-old retired from professional tennis in 2024 and previously dismissed rumours earlier in 2026 linking him with a future run for the club’s presidency, calling those reports entirely untrue.

However, this new executive role allows the legendary sportsman to help shape Madrid’s off-pitch future while remaining close to the team he has supported since childhood.

Madrid pay tribute to legendary supporter

Real Madrid moved quickly to welcome the former world number one into their leadership structure, praising his values and athletic pedigree.

A spokesperson for Real Madrid told Sky Sports:

“Rafael Nadal, an honorary member of Real Madrid, is one of the greatest legends in the history of sport and one of the most admired and recognised Spanish athletes in the world.”

The Spanish giants added that bringing such a distinguished figure into the boardroom was a matter of tremendous pride for everyone connected with the club.

A spokesperson for Real Madrid told Sky Sports:

“For Real Madrid and for all Madrid fans, it is a great source of pride that a figure of his sporting and human stature, a benchmark of Spanish and world sport, will become part of our Board of Directors and contribute, from this position of responsibility, to the present and future of our club.”

From family rivalries to Bernabeu influence

Nadal’s devotion to Real Madrid has always stood out, particularly given his family history inside Spanish football.

His uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal, played as a defender for Barcelona during the 1990s as part of Johan Cruyff’s famous Dream Team.

Despite those strong Catalan ties, Rafael grew up a passionate follower of Madrid, earning official honorary member status from Perez back in March 2011.

His influence on the club is not entirely unprecedented, as Nadal previously played an informal role in Madrid’s transfer business over a decade ago.

Back in 2014, the tennis star directly contacted Perez to urge him to sign Marco Asensio, who was then making his mark as an exciting young talent at Mallorca.

Asensio subsequently completed his move to the Spanish capital and enjoyed a trophy-laden career at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Cross-sport elite leadership trends

Nadal’s entry into football administration adds to a growing list of global sporting icons moving into club executive suites.

NBA superstar LeBron James secured a minority stake in Liverpool in 2011 through Fenway Sports Group, later converting that investment into a broader holding across FSG’s portfolio.

NFL legend Tom Brady took on an advisory role and minority ownership stake at Birmingham City in 2023, while basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo joined the ownership group at Major League Soccer outfit Nashville SC.

Similarly, former NFL star JJ Watt invested in Burnley in 2023, actively involving himself in the Lancashire side’s commercial operations and local community initiatives.

Nadal will now look to apply his own world-class experience and high standards to the day-to-day governance of the reigning European champions.
