Man Utd decide Michael Carrick future after dramatic Roma comeback win

Manchester United hierarchy had previously agreed to keep Michael Carrick in charge until the upcoming international break regardless of mid-week European results, according to a report by The Athletic as picked up by the Evening Standard.

Despite United pulling off a dramatic 3-2 Champions League comeback against Roma on Tuesday evening, senior figures at Old Trafford reportedly plan to stick to that timeline before making any long-term decision on the manager’s role.

Carrick entered the fixture under enormous pressure following a nine-match winless streak across all competitions. Things looked grim early on as Matias Soule and Donyell Malen put the Italian visitors two goals up within the first 17 minutes, sparking fresh anger among the home supporters.

Tactical reshuffle sparks second-half fightback

United looked off the pace throughout the opening period, prompting pundit Alan Shearer to describe the first-half display on Amazon Prime as embarrassing in every department. However, Carrick made subtle tactical changes at the break, moving Matheus Cunha into a central role alongside Bryan Mbeumo while pushing Bruno Fernandes into dangerous areas.

Speaking to UEFA after the full-time whistle, Carrick explained how he urged his squad to draw upon the famous history of Old Trafford nights.

“I spoke at half-time about being positive. Anything can happen here, I’ve seen it many times over the years. You just need something to go our way and the boys were fantastic second half.”

The instructions paid immediate dividends in intensity, even after midfielder Carlos Baleba was forced off with a hamstring injury early in the second half. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo revealed that the manager gave the squad a stern reminder of what was required at the interval.

Speaking to Amazon Prime, Mainoo said:

“We needed a bit of a kick. We were a bit reactionary. When we lost the ball, we weren’t reacting as quickly as we could have and the boss really drilled it into us that we need to be more active and take the game ourselves.”

Fernandes and Cunha turn the tide

The fightback started when Bruno Fernandes scored a retaken penalty, after his initial spot kick was saved but ordered to be taken again by referee Jesus Gil Manzano for encroachment. Fernandes then turned provider, sending in a precise delivery for Cunha to sweep home the equalizer in the 83rd minute.

Former United captain Wayne Rooney praised Carrick’s ability to motivate the team during such a high-stakes encounter.

Giving his analysis on Amazon Prime, Rooney said:

“I think Michael Carrick deserves a lot of credit as well, because if you were in his shoes you are thinking how can I change this around, so whatever he said to the team at half-time that got them on the front-foot and got that belief in them that they could win the game.”

Carrick also showed faith in youth by introducing 19-year-old Shea Lacey off the bench for Amad Diallo in the 75th minute. The teenager responded by playing an inch-perfect pass to Cunha, who slotted in the winning goal before being sent off late in stoppage time for a second bookable offense.

Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo, Cunha reflected on the emotional weight of driving the team to a crucial victory.

“To be part of this is a heavy responsibility. I always talk about this, to be this guy who has responsibility in the hard moments and the good moments, to be always there to show.”

Crucial Premier League test lies ahead

While the victory provides temporary relief and ends a frustrating drought, United executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox are reported to be evaluating potential alternatives ahead of the international break. Unai Emery, Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte have all been linked with the Old Trafford post in recent weeks.

United host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday before the domestic season pauses. Carrick will know that only another strong showing against Villa will keep the pressure at bay before the hierarchy reassesses his position.
