Alexis Mac Allister casts fresh doubt on long-term Liverpool future

Alexis Mac Allister has dropped a fresh hint that his long-term future may lie away from Liverpool after admitting that nothing has been decided regarding a contract extension.

The Argentina midfielder previously admitted to feeling very sad after learning the club were not in a position to offer him a new deal over the summer.

While team-mates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secured new terms, the former Brighton man was left waiting with less than two years remaining on his current Anfield agreement.

Clearing the air after emotional remarks

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, the 27-year-old clarified that his previous explosive comments came straight from the heart rather than any deliberate attempt to pressure the club.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Mac Allister said:

In that press conference, because people were asking me about my future, I spoke purely from emotion. I wasn’t judging the club or anything like that.

He insisted he holds no grudges against the hierarchy at Anfield.

In the end, they are the ones who run things and make the decisions, which is completely fine by me.

Uncertainty over what lies ahead

Mac Allister joined the Reds for a bargain £35million fee in the summer of 2023 and quickly established himself as a vital cog under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

Despite his stellar performances on the pitch, he failed to offer any guarantees about staying on Merseyside beyond his current deal.

Speaking to ESPN, Mac Allister said:

There isn’t a final decision set in stone. The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract.

He acknowledged that a lot can change quickly in football while expressing his deep affection for the club.

I’m going to give my absolute best. I have two years left, and a lot can happen in two years, there are plenty of possibilities.

Embracing life at Anfield

Mac Allister bounced back from a difficult previous campaign to start the new season strongly, contributing two goals and an assist in the opening matches.

He maintains that he remains completely happy representing the Merseyside outfit.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Mac Allister stated:

From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too.

The midfielder is currently away on international duty with Argentina before returning to domestic action with the Reds.
