Cole Palmer reportedly believes he will be ready to feature for Chelsea in their upcoming clash against Bournemouth. The Sun first reported the update, as picked up by Metro, suggesting the playmaker is confident of starting this weekend.

The midfielder had raised alarm bells after withdrawing from the England squad during the international break. A minor muscular issue forced him to pull out of the Nations League fixtures, sparking fears of another spell on the sidelines.

Rather than staying at Cobham, the former Manchester City player travelled to the Caribbean to build up his fitness. He worked closely with a specialist coach to ensure his recovery remained on track.

Chelsea’s hierarchy were reportedly comfortable with this individual programme, prioritising the management of his workload. With the creative midfielder key to their plans, avoiding any long-term setbacks is paramount.

A crucial boost for Xabi Alonso

Managing director or head coach Xabi Alonso will be desperate to have his star man available. Palmer has enjoyed a spectacular start to the season, contributing four goals and two assists before the international interval.

Without his creative spark, the Blues can look predictable in the final third. He provides the unpredictability and goal threat that Alonso needs to break down stubborn Premier League defences.

However, rushing him back too quickly could backfire if he suffers a recurrence of the muscular problem. The Standard has also listed the Bournemouth match as his expected return date, offering further encouragement.

If the playmaker trains without any negative reaction, a starting spot at Stamford Bridge seems highly likely. Yet, the coaching staff must weigh up the immediate need for points against his long-term fitness.

Managing a packed Stamford Bridge squad

Alonso faces several other selection dilemmas as he prepares for the visit of the Cherries. The Spanish manager is notoriously secretive about injuries, drawing comparisons to his close friend Mikel Arteta.

Key players like Moises Caicedo and Marco Palestra are also nearing returns after frustrating spells on the sidelines. Palestra has not played a single minute this season due to a quadriceps injury.

Meanwhile, Caicedo has only managed a brief cameo before aggravating a calf problem. Reece James missed out on international selection with a hamstring issue.

The squad depth could allow Alonso to rotate, with other options standing by to play on the right wing. If Palmer is deemed unready to start, he may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Tactical shifts on the horizon

Alonso could opt for a 3-4-3 formation to accommodate his returning stars. The first-choice goalkeeper is expected to train on Friday after returning from international duty and should start.

In defence, academy graduates could challenge the existing backline. Portuguese wing-backs could occupy the wide positions to provide width.

The midfield engine room could see returning stars partner up to provide stability. This would see some of the summer signings drop out of the starting lineup.

In attack, the experienced striker is expected to lead the line as he searches for his first goal in a Chelsea shirt. Young forwards could support him if other players fail to recover.

Ultimately, all eyes will be on the team sheet to see if Palmer makes the cut. His presence could be the deciding factor in whether Chelsea can build real momentum this season.
