Harry Kane has revealed that England’s World Cup semi-final defeat against Argentina remains his most painful tournament exit because the team lost their identity on the pitch.

The national team captain is still processing the 2-1 defeat from the summer, where Thomas Tuchel’s side barely touched the ball after taking the lead in the 55th minute. As the squad reconvened at St George’s Park, the striker admitted that the lingering pain goes deeper than any previous setback in his international career.

The weight of a missed opportunity

Speaking to the written press, Kane said:

It felt like it wasn’t us as a team. It wasn’t the team that we wanted to be and said we’d be. When you maybe go against your beliefs and you lose, it feels 10 times worse than just losing in a way where … if we lose doing it our way you accept it, take it on the chin and move on.

The skipper added that the long-serving group must address why they repeatedly struggle to play their natural game against elite nations in the latter stages of major tournaments. He noted in his press conference that the squad needs honest discussions about mentality, personalities, and tactical direction moving forward.

Refusing to watch the final

The disappointment was so raw that the Bayern Munich forward chose to completely avoid watching the tournament’s climax. Instead of tuning in to see Spain lift the trophy after they defeated Argentina, he headed straight to New York for a round of golf.

Kane told reporters:

I didn’t watch it. Funnily enough, I was in New York playing golf, I flew straight to New York straight after the third and fourth play-off, spent a couple of days there, would like to say hiding in New York but New York was the busiest place in the world at that point.

Finding solace on the golf course and spending quality time with his family provided some much-needed perspective. He received supportive messages from both locals and American fans during his time away, helping him appreciate the positive strides made during the campaign.

Focus shifts to Tuchel and the Nations League

England must now put that heartbreak behind them as they prepare to face world champions Spain at Wembley in the Nations League. Tuchel welcomed the group back with a clear message that the squad should treat this campaign as a continuation of their two-year journey rather than a complete restart.

The preparations have been disrupted by a series of squad withdrawals, with Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento all missing out. Rice’s absence for load-management reasons gained particular attention due to ongoing hamstring issues.

Kane revealed that he exchanged voice notes with the Arsenal midfielder about the situation. Kane told journalists:

I spoke to Dec. I know Dec goes far and beyond for the club and country. I know he’s been struggling for a while with his issues. Dec reached out to me, he voice-noted me. Everyone has to look after themselves and I trust all the boys.

While the immediate focus remains on Saturday’s showdown under the Wembley arch, personal milestones are also on the horizon for the 33-year-old. Kane is just four caps away from matching Peter Shilton’s all-time England appearance record of 125.

He is also closing in on a contract extension at Bayern Munich and is tipped for recognition at the upcoming Ballon d’Or ceremony. Beyond his playing days, the striker even mused about a potential future transition to the NFL as a kicker or a move to Major League Soccer.
