Bruno Fernandes clashes with Man Utd boss Michael Carrick over tactics
Michael Carrick has publicly clashed with captain Bruno Fernandes after Manchester United’s embarrassing 4-1 Champions League loss against Como, pointing the finger directly back at his squad’s work rate following tactical criticism from his skipper.
United fell to their fifth defeat in 11 matches this season at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium on Wednesday night, extending their dismal winless run across all competitions to seven games.
Fernandes questions game plan in Italy
Speaking to TNT Sports after being substituted on 67 minutes with United trailing 3-0, Fernandes openly questioned the strategy drawn up by Carrick and his coaching staff.
Speaking about the tactical setup, Fernandes said:
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave a bit of space in behind and then try to get the ball in the first moment to wait for them, to give them the ball.”
The midfielder went on to add:
“But sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams, they get confident, they have so many bodies behind the ball that make you run a lot which makes people get frustrated.”
Carrick fires back over lack of effort
Carrick was quick to dismiss his captain’s analysis during his post-match press conference, rejecting the idea that tactical instruction was to blame for the heavy loss.
Addressing the media, Carrick said:
“We actually were half-pressed man-to-man in the second half and then conceded a goal from that.”
The manager then turned his focus onto the physical output of the squad, adding:
“And whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win.”
Carrick, who was not seen acknowledging Fernandes when replacing him with Joshua Zirkzee in the second half, went on to describe the performance as unacceptable while taking personal responsibility for the club’s plight.
Humiliation on European stage
The exchange crowned a miserable trip to Italy where Cesc Fabregas’ Como side dismantled United from the outset, despite missing nine first-team players through a defensive injury crisis.
Former Real Madrid prodigy Nico Paz opened the scoring inside two minutes before Anastasios Douvikas quickly doubled the lead for the Champions League debutants.
Paz added his second on 57 minutes and Jacobo Ramon capped off the dominant display, with Zirkzee’s late strike from an Amad delivery offering nothing more than a minor footnote.
Former European Cup winning managers Jurgen Klopp and Rafa Benitez watched on from the stands as United were outrun and outclassed by the Serie A team, leaving the English side 22nd in the Champions League phase table and 13th in the Premier League.
Apology and mounting fan unrest
At the final whistle, Carrick approached the away section to raise both hands in apology to the travelling support, later admitting to feeling really angry with how his team performed.
Supporter anger erupted online following the defeat, with ‘Carrick Out’ trending on social media platform X.
Mark Goldbridge, presenter of The Overlap’s ‘Stick to United’ podcast and ‘The United Stand’, tweeted “Sack him tonight” as fans voiced frustration over the former midfielder’s tenure.
Bournemouth visit looms large
Carrick, who signed a two-year contract in May after leading United to third place last term, insisted he has not given his own position any thought despite mounting pressure.
Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon when they host Bournemouth at Old Trafford, searching for their first league victory since beating Ipswich 5-2 at the end of August.
