Alf-Inge Haaland comments resurface after Manchester City guilty verdict

Old comments from Erling Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland, have now come back into the spotlight, suggesting the forward might not be at the Etihad Stadium for much longer.
The Norwegian striker has been a sensation in England, but his father previously made it clear that his son’s stay in Manchester would have a strict expiration date.
A father’s blueprint for a global career
Long before the Premier League champions were hit with their massive guilty verdict, Alf-Inge mapped out a career path that involved conquering every major league in Europe.
Speaking on the documentary Haaland: The Big Decision back in 2022, the former Leeds United midfielder openly discussed his son’s desire to test himself across the continent.
Explaining the striker’s long-term ambitions, Alf-Inge said:
“I think Erling wants to prove his abilities in all leagues. Then he can stay there [Manchester City] for three or four years at the most.”
If that timeline is followed strictly, the prolific forward could be preparing to pack his bags at the conclusion of the current campaign.
The list of European giants
The elder Haaland did not stop at suggesting a departure, as he went on to name the specific clubs they had ranked as potential destinations.
While Manchester City topped their ranking at the time, several other European heavyweights were actively being considered for the next step.
Detailing their hierarchy of preferred destinations, Alf-Inge said:
“On our list, I think City is the best team. [Bayern] Munich is number two. We have Real Madrid as number three, Paris Saint-Germain as number four.”
He also mentioned that Liverpool, Chelsea, and Barcelona were viewed in a similar bracket, giving the striker plenty of elite options when he decides to move on.
With City now facing the threat of points deductions, being stripped of their silverware, or even relegation, those European giants will surely be on high alert.
Silence on the international stage
The tension surrounding the club’s situation has already spilled over into the international break, with the player shielded from the media.
He was scheduled to speak to journalists before Norway’s match against Portugal but was pulled from his press duties at the last minute.
According to TV2, the Manchester City talisman was replaced by Benfica players Andreas Schjelderup and Fredrik Aursnes to avoid questions about his club’s legal troubles.
The forward has not yet commented on the verdict, leaving fans and pundits to speculate on how the ruling impacts his future.
A long-term commitment in question
Despite his father’s previous comments, the player has previously expressed a desire to build a legacy in Manchester.
He signed a massive contract extension in 2025 that runs until 2034, which seemingly committed his peak years to the Premier League side.
Speaking about his future after signing that contract last year, Erling Haaland said:
“I’m going to stay for a long time so now I can fully focus on getting better because [I know] I’m going to stay for such a long time.”
