Mikel Arteta signs new Arsenal contract until 2030
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a fresh contract that keeps him in north London until 2030.
The Spaniard, whose previous agreement was set to run out at the end of the current campaign, has put pen to paper on a four-year deal. This extension ensures his tenure at the Emirates Stadium will stretch beyond a decade, having first arrived to take charge in December 2019.
The deal rewards the 44-year-old with a significant salary increase, placing him among the best-paid managers in the global game. His coaching staff have also secured extended terms alongside him.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website about his decision to commit to the club, Arteta said:
It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal.
Under his guidance, the Gunners have undergone a complete transformation. After years of struggling to secure European football, Arteta led the team to the Premier League title last season, ending a 22-year wait for the domestic crown.
Now, the Spanish tactician is aiming to build a lasting dynasty in north London. He believes the club’s recent success is merely the foundation for what is to come.
Expressing his excitement for the future, Arteta told Arsenal.com:
We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.
Building a winning dynasty
The extension cements Arteta’s position as the longest-serving boss in the English top flight following Pep Guardiola’s exit from Manchester City.
While domestic success has been achieved, European glory remains a major target. Arsenal suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final last season, a result that serves as powerful motivation for the squad.
The club’s hierarchy have expressed their absolute delight at securing the manager’s services for the long term. Co-chairmen Stan and Josh Kroenke praised his connection to the club’s identity.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Stan and Josh Kroenke said:
He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values and carries them in his heart.
The American owners highlighted his dedication to taking the club even further after their recent triumphs.
The co-chairmen added:
He knows what this club means to everyone connected to it and is committed to building on everything we have achieved together.
A massive financial reward
The new agreement represents a major financial upgrade for Arteta, who previously earned £10m a year alongside a £5m bonus for reaching the Champions League.
The Spaniard measured his value against Atletico Madrid chief Diego Simeone and former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who both reportedly earned in excess of £20m annually.
This lucrative package reflects the incredible turnaround Arteta has overseen since replacing Unai Emery, inheriting a fanbase that had grown increasingly frustrated during the final years of Arsene Wenger’s tenure.
Having previously served as club captain under Wenger, Arteta has successfully united the fanbase and restored the club to the pinnacle of English football, having also won the FA Cup earlier in his tenure.
Stadium plans put on hold
Arteta’s influence at the club extends far beyond the training pitch. Arsenal have recently decided to pause their proposals for a significant redevelopment of the Emirates Stadium.
This decision was made after the manager raised concerns regarding the potential disruption that a temporary move would cause to his playing squad.
With his future now resolved, Arteta can focus entirely on matters on the pitch as the champions look to maintain their domestic dominance.
Bouncing back after the break
The Gunners return to domestic action this weekend as they host Leeds on Saturday afternoon.
They will be eager to get back to winning ways following a disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Brighton just before the international break. That loss ended their flawless start to the campaign, but the new contract announcement provides the perfect boost ahead of their return.
