Virgil van Dijk hits out at utter nonsense claims in press conference

Addressing the tactical claims
When asked about the tournament, the Liverpool skipper dismissed talk regarding tactical switches. He pointed out that game plans originate from the coaching staff.
Replying to the reporter during the exchange, Virgil van Dijk told the room:
Well, it’s easy to say in hindsight, “We should have done this differently” or “We should have done that differently”. One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five. That is utter nonsense. The fact is we simply failed at the World Cup; those are the hard facts.
The central defender rejected the notion that he holds personal animosity towards reporters. He simply takes issue with fabricated stories.
Defending team unity
Further addressing the media narrative, Virgil van Dijk explained that collective responsibility matters most. He stressed that results belong to the whole group.
Speaking to the media, Virgil van Dijk said:
We didn’t play a good World Cup. It’s not about me. You perform together; you’re a team. Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup – that sort of thing is completely baseless.
He also clarified how the defensive setup was chosen against Morocco. The tactical approach came directly from the team management.
Elaborating on the tactical decisions made during the tournament, Virgil van Dijk stated:
The plan is devised by the staff. Nonsense is being spread so that I look even worse. That happens far too often.
Looking ahead to Germany
The defender has started the domestic campaign in strong form. He recently helped his club secure three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League alongside partner Jeremy Jacquet.
The national team will now turn their attention to a high-profile fixture. They face Germany in the UEFA Nations League opener.
