Christian Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg by mutual consent
Christian EriksenJust over three months following his frightening on-pitch collapse while playing for Denmark, Christian Eriksen and Wolfsburg have parted ways by mutual consent. The 34-year-old former Manchester United midfielder agreed an early termination of his contract with the German second-tier side, which was initially set to last until June 2027.
Family comes first for the midfielder
Eriksen has been spending time recuperating in his homeland since the health scare during an international fixture against Ukraine in June. The experienced playmaker admitted that being near his loved ones took priority as he navigated his recovery programme following the incident.
Speaking to the club’s official channels, Eriksen said:
At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.
He added that his stint in Germany featured various contrasting moments. Eriksen stated:
My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead.
A turbulent spell in Germany
The playmaker arrived at the Volkswagen Arena last summer as a free agent following his departure from Old Trafford. Across 34 appearances in all competitions, he netted three goals and provided ten assists while wearing the captain’s armband.
Despite his best efforts on the pitch, the team suffered a relegation from the top division via a play-off defeat against Paderborn in May. His final competitive outing for the Wolves occurred during that dramatic conclusion to the campaign.
Reflecting on a second health scare
The 151-cap international previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening European Championship group fixture against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021. Following that initial emergency, he was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator device.
When he collapsed for a second time in June, the medical apparatus successfully administered a corrective shock. He later reassured supporters that the mechanism fulfilled its exact purpose in protecting his health during the distressing ordeal.
Club respects the player’s wishes
Wolfsburg’s managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, explained that the decision regarding the player’s career path rested entirely with the individual. The club hierarchy felt it was vital to provide complete freedom under such unique circumstances.
In a statement, Hecking said:
It was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.
Hecking also praised the character shown by the former Tottenham and Ajax star during his time in the squad. Hecking noted:
Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his team-mates, our staff and the fans.
Looking ahead
Eriksen departs the German side with an illustrious CV that includes spells at Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford, and Manchester United. It remains uncertain whether the veteran midfielder intends to continue his professional playing career after returning to Denmark.
