Wayne Rooney warns son Kai over Manchester United fame pitfalls

Wayne Rooney has opened up about the unique challenges confronting his teenage son, Kai, following his decision to sign a scholarship deal with Manchester United.

The former United captain discussed the issue in an interview with the Guardian, as reported by the Manchester Evening News and the Mirror, warning of the social pressures that come with playing for such a prestigious club.

Spotting the wrong crowd

With 16-year-old Kai stepping into the spotlight at Old Trafford, his parents are fully aware of the unwanted attention his famous surname might bring.

Speaking to the Guardian about how to separate true companions from those looking to exploit his status, Rooney explained:

“He’s joined United and if there’s suddenly a group of people starting to get close to him, you’ll see that.”

The former striker made it clear that while he is not discouraging his son from forming new relationships, the family must remain vigilant.

Speaking to the Guardian, Rooney added:

“We’ve got this with Kai having signed for Manchester United. We know who his friends are.”

Forging a legacy of his own

Kai has spent five years in the youth setup at Carrington, having first joined the club at the age of 11.

He is currently playing for the Under-18 squad and even made his debut at Old Trafford during an FA Youth Cup victory against Derby County last season.

However, his father is determined that any success the young forward achieves must be earned entirely on his own merits.

Speaking in the third episode of the family’s Disney+ documentary series, The Real Rooneys, the former England international said:

“What I don’t want is him to get a scholarship or get a contract because of me.”

Rooney wants his son to be judged solely on his footballing ability rather than the legendary status of his father.

In the same episode of the Disney+ show, Rooney stated:

“Kai wants his own legacy, and I’ll be there to support him.”

The next step at Carrington

The young forward is part of a promising group of eight academy prospects who recently secured scholarship terms at the club.

Among those stepping up to the Professional Development Phase alongside Kai is Jacey Carrick, the son of former United midfielder Michael Carrick.

This scholarship represents the final stage of youth development before players are eligible to sign their first professional contracts.

Kai, who suffered a foot injury that disrupted his campaign earlier this year, is set to celebrate his 17th birthday next month.

Once he reaches that milestone, the teenager will officially be allowed to sign a professional deal at Old Trafford.
