Alan Shearer delivers grim Tottenham relegation verdict

Premier League icon Alan Shearer has given his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s alarming start to the campaign. Despite a massive summer overhaul, the north league side find themselves at the foot of the standings.

Spurs invested nearly four hundred million pounds on ten new recruits while parting ways with several high-profile figures. Yet they remain winless after five matches and have already exited the Carabao Cup.

Shocking start to the campaign

Speaking in association with Betfair, Shearer admitted that nobody predicted such a dismal opening phase for the club. The sheer scale of the financial outlay makes their current position astonishing.

We should be surprised by Spurs’ start to the season, because I don’t think anyone in football would have said after five games, Spurs are going to be winless and they’re going to be bottom of the league, with the money that they’ve spent, no one could foresee what’s happening to them.

The former striker noted that heavy investment does not automatically guarantee instant success on the pitch. Big fees were splashed on numerous arrivals during the recent transfer window.

Pressure mounts after summer spending

Shearer highlighted the heavy financial backing provided to manager Roberto De Zerbi. The club brought in a long list of targets, but questions are already being raised about the value for money.

I’ve said many times, that they brought the players in this summer, but they spent an absolute fortune on them. On everyone, I think. I mean, Van Hecke was a lot of money, Tonali was incredible money, Savio, and Marmoush are others as well.

The pundit stressed that the international break brings a lengthy period of reflection. Victory will be an absolute necessity as soon as domestic action resumes.

The Aston Villa comparison

Even with all the early-season gloom, Shearer does not believe the club will actually drop out of the top flight. He pointed to a recent precedent set by another Premier League side.

Aston Villa endured a similarly sluggish start last term before recovering to secure a European finish. Tottenham will hope to emulate that exact turnaround in the coming months.

I still think they’ll have enough to stay up, they’ll use the Aston Villa situation and what happened to them at the start of last season when I don’t think they won in their first five games and they then managed to climb the league and qualify for Europe again.

Although a relegation battle may ultimately be avoided, Shearer confessed his pre-season prediction of a top-six finish now looks very unlikely. A huge amount of work lies ahead for the squad.
