Estevao breaks silence on Chelsea frustrations under Xabi Alonso

Chelsea winger Estevao Willian has addressed his lack of regular starting appearances under Xabi Alonso in the Premier League this term.

The 19-year-old has featured in six matches across all competitions this season but has played no more than 150 minutes overall.

Limited minutes under Alonso

Estevao has started none of Chelsea’s opening five Premier League fixtures since the appointment of Xabi Alonso.

Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have enjoyed a fine vein of form, limiting the young Brazilian to four substitute appearances totalling just 23 minutes.

He was also hauled off at half-time during the Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United after a difficult opening 45 minutes.

Coping with tough times

Speaking at a press conference in Brisbane while away with the Brazil squad, Estevao discussed his current situation in west London.

As quoted by ESPN, Estevao told reporters in Australia:

I think every coach has their own way of playing. Of course, we work every day, I give my best every day, and that’s what I do.

He added that he prefers to concentrate purely on the aspects of his professional career that remain within his own hands.

We have quality players at Chelsea, so what I do is focus on what I can control. I try to give my best in training.

Overcoming injury heartbreak

The forward missed the World Cup earlier this year after sustaining a hamstring injury in April during a defeat against Manchester United.

Reflecting on that difficult spell away from the pitch, Estevao credited his family for their unwavering support throughout his rehabilitation.

As quoted by the CBF, Estevao said:

I think we missed a very special moment, but they were always by my side, from beginning to end, so I’m very grateful to them.

Managerial backing

Alonso previously insisted that the youngster remains firmly in his long-term plans at Stamford Bridge despite his reduced role.

The Spanish coach noted earlier this month that the teenager possesses huge potential and must continue working hard to adapt quickly.

Estevao is now focused on international duty with Brazil before returning to Stamford Bridge to fight for a place in the starting XI.
