Richarlison could take Tottenham to FIFA after squad omission

Richarlison could theoretically ask FIFA to cancel his contract with Tottenham Hotspur following his omission from their Premier League squad.

The forward was left unregistered after a proposed departure during the summer transfer window failed to materialise before the deadline.

As a result, the 29-year-old cannot feature for the north London club in domestic action until the winter transfer market opens on New Year’s Day.

Legal expert weighs in on FIFA option

Specialist sports lawyer Eduardo Carlezzo spoke to Brazilian media outlet Globo about the situation facing the forward in the capital.

While noting that every dispute is judged individually, the legal expert explained that players have previously sought contract cancellations through football tribunals.

Speaking to Globo, Eduardo Carlezzo said:

In theory, and without going into the specific case of Richarlison, it is possible for a player to seek before the FIFA football court a termination for just cause for not having been registered in the competitions in which he will play.

He added that such evaluations involve examining the entire contractual relationship and the specific tournaments available to the athlete.

Speaking to Globo, Eduardo Carlezzo said:

It is important to note that this type of analysis is done on a case-by-case basis by FIFA, considering all the elements of the contract, the relationship with the player, the competitions he could potentially play and the competitions he will no longer play.

Carlezzo also pointed out that his firm has previously handled comparable disputes where footballers were sidelined entirely.

Squad restrictions and missed moves

To earn a spot in the squad when January arrives, the Brazilian would need to displace one of the 17 non-homegrown players currently registered.

His exclusion came ahead of team-mates Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons, with the latter currently sidelined by injury until February.

During the recent window, a potential return to Everton collapsed before the deadline, while a prospective switch to Vasco da Gama also fell through.

Sp17 foreign player slots proved restrictive, and attempts by the club to recruit Iliman Ndiaye from under the noses of Manchester City were ultimately unsuccessful.

Training away from the main group

While frozen out of competitive fixtures, the forward continues to maintain his fitness away from the senior setup.

He posted social media footage of his individual workouts shortly after watching his club suffer a 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Sharing a clip of his conditioning work on Instagram, Richarlison wrote in a caption that his concentration remains unbroken.

In another video demonstrating his acceleration during drills, he revealed that he had reached a new personal milestone in training.
