Alexander-Arnold makes decision on Madrid future amid Arsenal interest

Trent Alexander-Arnold has made a firm decision regarding his immediate future at Real Madrid, delivering a significant blow to Arsenal and Liverpool.

Both Premier League giants have been closely monitoring the 27-year-old right-back as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

However, the England international is determined to stay in Spain and fight for his place under Jose Mourinho, ruling out any prospect of a winter departure.

A difficult spell in Spain

The former Liverpool academy graduate has found opportunities hard to come by since his high-profile move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2025.

He has struggled to secure a regular starting berth in the Spanish capital, with his playing time heavily impacted by the arrival of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan.

So far this season, Alexander-Arnold has featured in only five matches across all competitions, starting just two of Real Madrid’s opening seven league fixtures.

Despite his limited role, the defender remains focused on making a success of his Spanish adventure and is not looking for an easy escape route.

His representatives have reportedly explored potential options across Europe, but the player himself wants to remain in La Liga for the rest of the campaign.

Premier League giants on high alert

The defender’s situation has put several of English football’s biggest clubs on high alert, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea all keeping tabs on him.

Mikel Arteta’s side are keen to inject more quality into their right-back options, particularly given the recent injury struggles of Ben White.

The Gunners have also had to manage squad selection issues elsewhere, with striker Viktor Gyokeres recently admitting to some frustration over his playing time.

Speaking to Swedish news outlet SVT Sport, Gyokeres said:

“Of course, there was a lot of speculation. But I had a full pre-season, and it felt good. I was fully focused on Arsenal.”

For Liverpool, the desire to bring Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield is driven by their failure to adequately replace him since his departure.

Neither Jeremie Frimpong nor Conor Bradley have managed to convince the club hierarchy that they are the long-term solution on the right side of defence.

No January move on the cards

Those hoping for a sensational winter return to the Premier League are set to be disappointed, as a January transfer has been firmly ruled out.

Alexander-Arnold is determined to see out the current campaign in Madrid before reassessing his long-term future at the end of the season.

This stance means his suitors will have to patient, with any potential transfer battle put on hold until the summer of 2026.

Anfield hierarchy prepares for change

The news comes at a time of transition for Liverpool, who have recently confirmed the return of a familiar face to oversee their recruitment strategy.

Julian Ward has been officially appointed as the club’s new sporting director, taking over the reins at a crucial moment for the Reds.

Speaking to the club’s official channels upon his return, Ward said:

“I am incredibly excited to take on this role and it goes without saying that I am hugely grateful for the trust that has been placed in me by ownership.”

Ward will have plenty of decisions to make, with Liverpool also credited with interest in Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven and Atletico Madrid’s Marcos Llorente.

Whether Alexander-Arnold becomes a primary target for Ward next summer remains to be seen, but the Spanish capital remains his home for now.
