Man Utd won’t discipline Bruno Fernandes over Michael Carrick criticism
Bruno Fernandes
Wayne RooneyBruno Fernandes will avoid internal disciplinary action and will remain Manchester United captain following his public criticism of head coach Michael Carrick’s tactics.
The club hierarchy acknowledge the midfielder’s frustration after the heavy 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, deciding against fining or stripping the armband from their skipper ahead of Sunday’s fixture against Bournemouth.
Fernandes targets tactical setup after Como collapse
Fernandes made his feelings clear after being substituted in the second half of the midweek defeat, watching from the bench as United conceded four goals in Italy.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Fernandes said:
“It’s a decision from the staff not to press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence.”
The Portugal international added further fuel to the fire by insisting the accountability rested entirely on the bench rather than the squad.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Fernandes said:
“That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me.”
His comments follow similar public frustration expressed by defender Lisandro Martinez after United’s European defeat to Atletico Madrid the previous week.
Carrick fires back at effort levels
Carrick was quick to respond to his captain’s strategic complaints, pointing out that United attempted to alter their approach during the second half without success.
The under-pressure manager made it clear that work rate, rather than tactical design, was the core issue behind the performance.
Speaking after the match, Carrick said:
“And there’s a little bit of whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play; if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.”
Rooney accuses squad of dodging responsibility
The public back-and-forth prompted a scathing assessment from former Old Trafford skipper Wayne Rooney, who accused Fernandes of passing the buck to protect himself.

Rooney warned that allowing senior players to question the coaching staff publicly threatens to destroy team unity from within.
Speaking on The United Stand, Rooney said:
“These players, they’re selfish. They don’t care about their team-mates, the manager, the staff, or the fans.”
Rooney further claimed that current members of the squad behave like children whenever results do not go their way, deflecting scrutiny onto everyone else.
The club’s record goalscorer insisted Fernandes needed to examine his own performances before pointing fingers at the coaching staff.
Armband retained for Bournemouth clash
Despite disappointment within Old Trafford over the public nature of the comments, decision-makers have chosen not to sanction Fernandes.
It remains to be seen whether Carrick will select the midfielder for Sunday’s crucial Premier League encounter against Bournemouth, where United face immense pressure to deliver a response.
