Liverpool dealt Alexander Isak injury blow on Sweden duty

Liverpool have been dealt a worrying fitness concern during the international break. Striker Alexander Isak has withdrawn from the Sweden squad and returned to Merseyside to undergo medical assessments.

The 27-year-old forward picked up an injury while representing his country on Friday night. Despite scoring the opening goal in Sweden’s 2-1 Nations League triumph against Romania in Stockholm, he will now miss his nation’s upcoming fixtures.

A painful blow in Stockholm

Isak completed the full 90 minutes of the match but was later seen speaking to journalists with blood visible on his sock. The issue initially appeared to stem from a heavy stamp on his foot during the game.

Speaking to Aftonbladet after the match, Isak said:

“Those of you who have played might know that it takes a few minutes before it lets go, but it was okay.”

The Swedish FA confirmed that Isak and Burnley centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal were both forced to leave the national team camp. Neither player is considered available for the upcoming Nations League matches.

Potter reveals thigh concern

While the initial focus was on his foot, Sweden manager Graham Potter offered a slightly different explanation for the striker’s sudden withdrawal. Potter indicated that a muscle issue was the primary reason for the caution.

Speaking to reporters, Sweden coach Graham Potter said:

“He’s got a small problem with his thigh. It’s not a big one but because of the amount of games we’ve got in a small space of time, he won’t be able to make those.”

The club confirmed the striker will miss upcoming fixtures against Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Romania. He will now be examined by the club’s medical team at their training base.

Striking form at Anfield

The Merseyside club will be desperate for their star forward to make a swift recovery. Isak has enjoyed an excellent start to the current campaign, scoring four times in his first five league matches.

His impressive form includes hitting the winner during a recent trip to Bournemouth. However, his overall contribution on the pitch has still drawn some constructive criticism from manager Andoni Iraola, who urged the striker to help the team keep possession in the opposition half.

Speaking after Liverpool’s recent victory, manager Andoni Iraola said:

“He took the chance after a quiet afternoon – and that’s what a striker’s job is like.”

Responding to those comments, Isak said:

“There are many games where I feel like I should and want to contribute more and be more involved.”

Crucial fixtures on the horizon

Liverpool supporters will hope this latest setback does not lead to another prolonged spell on the sidelines. Isak’s debut season at Anfield, following a £125 million transfer from Newcastle United, was severely disrupted by injuries.

During that difficult first year, the Swedish international was limited to only 14 league outings, scoring on three occasions. He has already surpassed that goal tally in the opening weeks of this season.

The Reds host Manchester City on Sunday, October 11. The club’s medical team faces a race against time to get their key frontman fit for that crucial Premier League clash.
