Tottenham bottom of Premier League after chaotic De Zerbi start

Tottenham find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after a disastrous start to the campaign under Roberto De Zerbi. Following successive 17th-place finishes, the club embarked on the biggest spending spree in their entire history during the summer transfer window.

Yet rather than scaling up the standings, the team have managed to look entirely unprepared for competitive action. They hold the unwanted distinction of being the last side in the country to find the back of the net in the league this season.

A confusing transfer window and expensive recruits

The club backed their manager with massive financial support, landing major targets by paying significantly over the odds. Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton to shore up the defence, but his difficult afternoon against Aston Villa contrasted sharply with the progress of Luka Vuskovic, who moved in the opposite direction.

In midfield, the arrival of Mateus Fernandes for £85m and Sandro Tonali for £100m created expectations of a dominant partnership. Instead, the Portuguese midfielder has spent time on the bench and been substituted at half-time, leaving the tactical blueprint looking like an unsolved mystery.

An alarming drought in the final third

Attack has proved the greatest weakness, highlighted by a lengthy goal drought before late strikes from Conor Gallagher and Van Hecke against Aston Villa. The recruitment choices up front have invited fierce scrutiny from pundits and supporters alike.

Omar Marmoush has been shifted between roles as a striker and a left-winger without a clear position. Meanwhile, the club invested heavily in Savio, whose previous record at Manchester City suggested limited goalscoring output before his arrival in north London.

The Italian coach has already expressed frustration regarding the character and leadership within his newly assembled squad. Writing in The Independent, Richard Jolly highlighted some of the contradictions in the manager’s public remarks about his group of players.

Speaking in his press duties, De Zerbi said:

That stance has prompted questions regarding the exact purpose of the club’s record-breaking outlay in the transfer market.

With a manager whose previous tenures have rarely extended beyond a couple of years, the stakes could not possibly be higher. Given the sheer scale of the financial investment, anything outside of European qualification represents a severe underperformance.
