The iconic former manager watched a match where the academy graduate made an appearance, only to be met with jeers from some sections of the crowd following his decision to leave Anfield.
The German tactician explained that he has reached an age where he has no interest in hiding his honest opinions, even if it means telling supporters that their current attitude is entirely wrong. He insisted that while he cannot dictate how people think, he is more than willing to point out when their behaviour misses the mark.
Speaking on Liverpool News, Klopp said:
I needed another 10 seconds to realize and switch the telly off. Because I, I, I, honestly, I couldn’t have been more disappointed in this moment. This is not us, 100% not.
A legacy that deserves respect
Klopp urged fans to remember what the defender has achieved during his two decades at Anfield.
He recalled that the defender was just 18 years old when he stepped up to score a vital set-piece against Hoffenheim. Had that set-piece not found the back of the net, the club would have failed to even qualify for the Champions League group stages during that pivotal campaign.
The former manager also highlighted the legendary meeting with Barcelona, where the defender pulled off a cheeky piece of skill to set up the decisive fourth goal. That moment of genius led to a historic victory that Klopp believes will never be replicated.
Reflecting on how the club usually treats its heroes, Klopp said:
We don’t forget the good things and we don’t forget the bad things, but we ignore the bad things and we remember the good things and improve as a group with that.
Giving everything for the badge
Alexander-Arnold has decided to seek a new challenge elsewhere next season, bringing an end to his long association with his boyhood team.
Klopp defended the player’s commitment, insisting that his dedication was never in question during their highly successful time together.
Speaking about the defender’s work ethic, Klopp said:
If he wouldn’t have given everything, I would tell you now. But every day, he gave absolutely everything for this badge.
The former boss added that the right-back has the Liverpool badge practically written into his skin, regardless of his upcoming move to another club.
The contract dispute and the owners
Addressing the frustration surrounding the defender departing on a free transfer, Klopp argued that fans have no right to be angry about financial details.
He suggested that any frustration over the lack of a transfer fee should belong to the hierarchy, who themselves have chosen not to hold a grudge.
Discussing the contract situation, Klopp said:
If somebody should be angry about that, it’s the owners, but they are not. So, we should, why he didn’t sign a new contract? I hear this from fans, this, this money discussion. He goes without a transfer fee.
Klopp concluded that the decision of how to treat a departing legend rests entirely with the fanbase.
He made it clear that turning on a player who has given his all is not the Liverpool way.
