Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte hints at Manchester United job
Antonio Conte has dropped a massive hint that he would welcome the chance to manage Manchester United, in an interview with The Athletic which has been reported by the Mirror. The Italian tactician is currently out of work after departing Napoli, but his latest comments suggest he is looking for a project at a historically massive club that has lost its way.
Restoring a fallen giant
While the former Chelsea boss did not name the Red Devils directly, his description of what he wants next fits the Old Trafford outfit perfectly.
Speaking to The Athletic, Conte said:
“There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history.”
The 57-year-old manager made it clear that he wants to bring a sleeping giant back to the very top of the game.
Continuing his point to The Athletic, Conte added:
“I’d like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more.”
Pressure mounts on Carrick
The Italian’s intriguing remarks arrive at a delicate moment for current Old Trafford boss Michael Carrick. The former England midfielder successfully steered his team back into Europe’s elite competition last term, but the current campaign has begun in disappointing fashion.
United have endured a slow start to their campaign, securing just a single victory from their opening league matches. Although the Old Trafford hierarchy have not made any official decision to replace Carrick, speculation is starting to build around his position.
According to reports from the Italian media, as highlighted by Caught Offside, Conte has already emerged as a leading candidate to take over if a change is made, with suggestions that some initial contact has occurred.
A proven track record of success
Conte certainly possesses the pedigree to turn a struggling club around, having lifted league trophies during spells with Juventus, Chelsea, and Inter Milan. During his last job in Italy, he guided Napoli to the Serie A title, becoming only the second boss to secure the Scudetto for the side since Diego Maradona’s era in the late 1980s.
He also has plenty of experience in English football, having secured both the Premier League trophy and the FA Cup during his tenure with the Blues, before a more difficult stint in North London with Tottenham Hotspur concluded in March 2023.
The Italian is famous for demanding high standards and instilling a fierce winning mentality in his players.
Explaining his philosophy to The Athletic, Conte said:
“I know full well that only one team can win every year, but I must carry in my heart, and instil in the hearts of the fans, my players and my directors, that spark, that hope that makes you say, ‘f***, we can win’.”
Doubts over the right fit
Despite his impressive trophy cabinet, not everyone is convinced that the former Juventus boss would be the right man for the Old Trafford hotseat. Former United defender Gary Neville has previously expressed reservations about whether the Italian’s intense style would suit the club.
Speaking in the past about the potential appointment, Neville claimed:
“He’s a great manager but I think certain managers fit certain clubs and I don’t think Conte fits United personally.”
The Red Devils have not lifted the Premier League trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013, with qualifying for the Champions League representing the peak of their ambitions during the subsequent decade. Whether the club’s decision-makers decide to stick with Carrick or look to a proven winner like Conte remains to be seen.
