Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez in hospital after Everton collision

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been taken to a Liverpool hospital after suffering a dangerous head collision during his side’s 2-0 victory against Everton.

The Argentinian international was involved in a heavy aerial clash with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite mid-way through the second half, leaving both players requiring immediate medical attention on the pitch.

Lengthy delay at Hill Dickinson Stadium

The sickening incident took place as Martinez attempted to claim a free-kick delivered into the penalty area by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Branthwaite was attempting to attack the ball, resulting in a direct clash of heads.

While Branthwaite was able to get back up after a short period and clear concussion protocols, Martinez remained prone on the turf as emergency medical care arrived.

Care was administered for approximately ten minutes, with medical staff fitting the World Cup winner with a neck brace and providing oxygen before he was stretchered away.

There were initial signs of encouragement as the 32-year-old was seen moving his arms and appeared fully conscious whilst being carried down the tunnel to an awaiting ambulance.

Xabi Alonso provides post-match update

Speaking to TNT Sports immediately after the final whistle, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that his goalkeeper had been transported straight to hospital for medical examinations.

Alonso said:

“As far as I know, he left the stadium conscious. Right now he’s in the hospital doing precautionary tests. So let’s see, but this is what I know so far.”

Commentator Darren Fletcher also confirmed on air that the summer signing from Aston Villa was being taken for local evaluation.

Speaking during the broadcast, Fletcher said:

“Only news we can bring you and bring you today is that he’s been taken away to hospital which is the best place possible.”

Pedro Neto dedicates victory to team-mate

With Martinez forced off in the 73rd minute, 21-year-old Belgian reserve goalkeeper Mike Penders was brought on to make his Premier League debut.

Pedro Neto had already given the visitors the lead early in the second half before adding a late second to seal the points and secure Chelsea’s first away win of the campaign.

The triumph also brought Chelsea their first Premier League clean sheet in nine months, dating back to a shutout against Brentford in January.

Speaking after his match-winning performance, two-goal hero Neto made sure to dedicate the result to his injured team-mate.

Neto told TNT Sports:

“We are really pleased. It is a shame for Emi but we wish him all the best. This win is for him. We are really happy but of course our thoughts are for him.”

What comes next for Chelsea

The victory makes it back-to-back league wins for Alonso’s side following their impressive 5-1 success against Bournemouth last time out.

Chelsea face a high-profile London derby against Tottenham next Saturday, though Martinez must now undergo standard medical checks and recovery protocols before any decision on his availability can be made.
