Liverpool fans taunt Man City at Anfield over financial verdict

Manchester City encountered a deeply hostile reception at Anfield as they returned to Premier League action for the first time since being found guilty of widespread financial breaches.

An independent commission recently ruled against the champions, finding them guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial regulations, including the use of disguised funding schemes to inflate revenues by £900m between 2009 and 2018.

With City having launched an official appeal, the trip to Merseyside was always destined to be a flashpoint given Liverpool were twice beaten to the title by fine margins during that era.

Hostile streets and an altered arrival

Local authorities and club officials took extra precautions ahead of the high-stakes clash to ensure safety around the ground.

Merseyside Police deployed drones and increased officer presence, while City’s two team buses took a quieter, alternative route through the staff and contractors’ entrance to avoid thousands of home supporters lining the streets.

Liverpool fans gathered nearly two hours before the late afternoon kick-off, airing chants targeting the visitors, while street vendors sold merchandise labelling the champions as cheats.

Inside the stadium, the atmosphere remained uncompromising as the visiting players were subjected to heavy boos during their warm-up and upon taking the pitch.

Inflatables and defiance in the away end

A banner reading “a generation of supporters cheated” was displayed by Liverpool fans in one corner of Anfield to highlight their frustration over past title races.

The visiting support responded by resurrecting a famous club tradition from the late 1980s, waving hundreds of inflatable bananas in the away section.

Organised by supporters’ group We Are 1984, the display was intended to show resilience and bring humor during a turbulent period for the institution.

Writing on social media ahead of the match, the group explained the motivation behind bringing back the iconic inflatables:

“The message – this fan base has always been on a rollercoaster.”

A fierce rivalry reignited by off-field saga

The commission’s findings have added immense friction to what was already the premier competitive rivalry in English football over the past decade.

Liverpool finished a single point behind City in both the 2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons, alongside their second-place finish in 2013/14, leaving home supporters feeling deeply aggrieved by the off-field revelations.

City continue to maintain their innocence and assert they possess clear evidence to overturn the independent commission’s ruling on appeal.

However, the fierce reception on Merseyside confirms that regardless of legal proceedings, the verdict has permanently heightened the tension between these two clubs whenever they meet on the pitch.
