Harry Kane’s new Bayern deal leaves Spurs buy-back clause active

Tottenham Hotspur still hold a first-option matching clause on Harry Kane despite the England striker committing his future to Bayern Munich with a record-breaking contract extension.

According to The Telegraph, as picked up by Caught Offside and football.london, Spurs retained the specific matching rights as part of the initial £100 million deal that took Kane to Germany in 2023. That clause remains active throughout his full spell in Munich, meaning his latest contract does not nullify Tottenham’s option to match any future accepted bid from a Premier League rival.

Bayern lock down record breaker

The 33-year-old striker recently collected the Ballon d’Or before agreeing to fresh terms with the Bundesliga giants until 2029. Reports indicate the agreement makes him Europe’s highest-paid footballer following an extraordinary spell in front of goal.

While Kane has gone three games without scoring, he has already recorded 18 goal contributions from just 14 matches this season. Bayern moved quickly to secure their star player, but the terms between the clubs mean North London remains a potential destination before he finishes his playing days.

The chase for Shearer’s record

Kane currently has 213 Premier League goals to his name, leaving him just 47 behind Alan Shearer’s all-time mark of 260. A future move back to England represents his only chance of surpassing that historic total.

The forward made a point of remembering his former club when picking up his individual honours on the global stage. Speaking during his Ballon d’Or acceptance speech, Kane said:

“Thank you to Tottenham Hotspur as well. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Tottenham.”

He added further praise for the people who shaped his career before leaving for Germany, saying:

“All the guidance, all the coaches you have allowed me to live my dream. For all those moments, all the ups and downs along the way has led me to this moment here today.”

Future options remain open

Though an immediate departure from Munich is off the table given his success in Germany, Bayern could eventually look to sell the England captain to recover funds before his contract concludes. Should another English side make a move, Spurs will have the right to match the offer.

For now, Kane remains focused on capturing the Champions League with Bayern, but the path for a eventual return to his boyhood club stays firmly intact.
